DoorDash Buying Instacart: What It Means for You

DoorDash buying Instacart news

DoorDash agreed to buy Instacart for about $17 billion. If you use Instacart, nothing changes yet. Here's what DoorDash buying Instacart means for you, and when.

Published Oct 31, 2026. Facts come from the companies' own announcements and SEC filings, listed at the bottom.

What happened

On Oct 29, 2026, DoorDash and Instacart announced a signed deal. DoorDash will buy Instacart, the grocery delivery app.

Instacart's board approved it unanimously. Instacart works with about 100,000 stores today.

How much DoorDash is paying

  • $65 per Instacart share, about $17 billion in total.
  • That's 26% above Instacart's stock price on Oct 22, the last trading day before news of talks came out.
  • At least 75% will be paid in cash. Stockholders can pick cash, DoorDash stock, or a mix, with stock capped at 25%.
  • DoorDash plans to pay with cash on hand and new debt.

When it will happen

The companies expect the deal to close by the end of 2027 or in the first half of 2028.

First it needs a yes from Instacart stockholders and from antitrust regulators in the US, plus approvals in Canada and Israel. Holders of about 19% of Instacart's shares have already agreed to vote yes.

If the deal ends for certain regulatory reasons, DoorDash pays Instacart $1.25 billion. If it ends in certain other cases, like Instacart taking a better offer, Instacart pays DoorDash $650 million.

What it means for Instacart customers

For now, nothing. Instacart told customers:

  • You can keep using the Instacart app and ordering from the same stores.
  • There are no changes to your account or membership benefits because of the deal.
  • Until the deal closes, Instacart and DoorDash run as separate companies.

After it closes, DoorDash says it expects to keep the Instacart brand and app.

What could change later

These are plans the companies named, not things that have happened:

  • One membership fee. DashPass and Instacart+ members would pay one fee instead of two. DoorDash estimates that would save members $100 million a year.
  • More stores. Instacart customers could shop at more than 50,000 more stores.
  • No exclusive deals. DoorDash says local grocers can keep working with any delivery app they choose.

What hasn't been announced

  • What a combined membership would cost, or when it would start.
  • Any change to Instacart prices, delivery fees or service fees.
  • Whether Instacart and DoorDash accounts, credits or promo codes will ever be linked.

We'll update this page when the companies share more.

What it means for Instacart shoppers

Shoppers are the people who pick and deliver your Instacart order. DoorDash says Instacart shoppers keep the freedom to choose how much they work and the info they use to pick batches. They can choose to take DoorDash orders too, or keep shopping only on Instacart.
