earnify and Upside: How to Double Dip on Gas Savings at bp & Amoco

Most gas apps make you choose: their discount or someone else's. But earnify and Upside are run by two different companies, so at the right station you may be able to use earnify and Upside on the same fill-up and collect from both.

Here's the short version: earnify is bp's own rewards app, and it takes cents off per gallon at bp and Amoco pumps. Upside is an independent cash back app that pays you back after you buy gas at stations in its network, which includes many bp and Amoco locations. Because one is a discount from the station and the other is cash back from a separate app, they can work together. This post walks through how to set up both, the exact order to follow at the pump, and what to watch out for.

What is earnify?

earnify is the free rewards app from bp, and it replaced BPme Rewards. It works at participating bp and Amoco stations for fuel, and at ampm stores for in-store purchases, across more than 8,000 locations nationwide, according to earnify. What is Upside?

Upside is a free cash back app for gas, groceries, and restaurants. You claim an offer in the app before you buy, pay with a credit or debit card, and Upside adds cash back to your balance, which you can cash out to your bank, PayPal, or a gift card. Offers are shown in cents per gallon and change by station and by day.

How to stack earnify and Upside on one fill-up

The key is to set up both before any money changes hands. Upside only pays if you claimed its offer before paying, and earnify only applies its discount if you check in before you pump.

1. Find a bp or Amoco station on Upside. Open the Upside map and look for a bp or Amoco station with an offer near you.
2. Check in with earnify. At the pump, enter the phone number on your earnify account (your loyalty ID) so your earnify discount is applied.
3. Claim the offer in Upside. Tap the station in Upside and claim the offer before you start pumping.
4. Pay with the card linked to Upside. Swipe or tap the same credit or debit card you added in Upside. Don't pay with cash or a gift card.
5. Pump, then confirm in Upside. Check in or upload your receipt if Upside asks, and the cash back lands in your balance.

The order of steps 2 and 3 doesn't matter much, as long as both happen before you pay. What matters is that you pay at the pump with your Upside card. If you pay inside the earnify app instead, the charge may not match the card Upside is watching for, and the cash back might not track.

How much can you save by double dipping?

On your first visit, the numbers add up quickly. Say you buy 12 gallons at a bp station where Upside shows 10¢ per gallon:

• earnify: 5¢ × 12 gallons = 60¢ off at the pump, on every fill-up
• Upside offer: about 10¢ × 12 = about $1.20 cash back
• Upside code M7FWF on your first Upside fill-up: 15¢ × 12 = $1.80 more

That's roughly $3.60 back on one tank, before any credit card rewards, plus the 250 earnify welcome points and the points you earn on the fuel. After your first Upside fill-up, you'd still get earnify's 5¢ and points plus whatever Upside offers that day. These are examples, not promises: Upside offers vary, and a discount at the pump can lower the cash back Upside calculates.

Things to watch out for

• Not every bp is on Upside. Check the Upside map first; if the station isn't there, you'll only get earnify.
• Upside may reduce cash back after discounts. Upside bases cash back on what you actually paid, so a pump discount can shave a little off it. You still come out ahead.
• Keep your receipt. If the purchase doesn't show up in Upside, a receipt with the station address helps you claim it.
• Welcome offers are one-time. The earnify 250-point welcome bonus and the Upside first-fill-up bonus each apply once. The earnify 5¢ off keeps going on every fill-up.
• Terms change. Both apps update offers often, so check each app before you fill up.

Add a credit card for a third layer

Upside pays you after the purchase, so your credit card still earns its normal rewards on the full charge. Paying with a card that earns extra on gas gives you three layers: earnify at the pump, Upside cash back, and card rewards. Just make sure it's the same card you linked in Upside.
